Ekta Kapoor Opens Up on Egg Freezing and Surrogacy

Egg freezing, also known as mature oocyte cryopreservation, is a technique used to save women's ability to get pregnant when she decides. Eggs are harvested from your ovaries then frozen unfertilized and stored for use whenever a female is ready. A frozen egg is then thawed, combined with sperm in a lab and implanted in your uterus (in vitro fertilization).

Why it's done

Egg freezing can be an option if you're not ready to become pregnant now but want to try to make sure you can get pregnant later. Egg freezing doesn't require sperm because the eggs aren't fertilized before they're frozen. You'll be given fertility drugs to make you ovulate so that you'll produce multiple eggs for retrieval.

You might consider egg freezing if:

• You have a condition or circumstance that can affect your fertility. These might include sickle cell anemia, autoimmune diseases such as lupus, and gender diversity, such as being transgender.
• You need treatment for cancer or another illness that can affect your ability to get pregnant. Certain medical treatments — such as radiation or chemotherapy — can harm your fertility. Egg freezing before starting treatment might enable you to have biological children later.
• You're undergoing in vitro fertilization. When undergoing in vitro fertilization, some people prefer egg freezing to embryo freezing for religious or ethical reasons.
• You wish to preserve younger eggs now for future use. Freezing eggs at a younger age might help you get pregnant when you're ready.

A very recent example of use of Egg freezing technology for having kids was used by none other than famous Bollywood Producer and Filmmaker Ekta Kapoor. She is one of the strongest women in Bollywood. She is fearless in her actions and not much affected by public opinions. Ekta Kapoor has broken the stereotype and got her kid through surrogacy. Lately, Ekta spoke about her choice of having a child through surrogacy and how early she had planned it.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Ekta said, “I had stored my eggs when I was 36. Had a calling for a long time. I don’t know what was it. I don’t know I thought I might get married, might not. Very late, if it happens. Or it may never happen because I am not gonna do anything just for the sake of it. I have always been such a nonconformist, there was no way I would… (conform to marriage).”

She said that Tusshar’s decision of having a child through surrogacy had given her the strength and confidence about herself. She said her mother told her to have the child then, but she told her she’d do it when the time would be right and via a surrogate. “And then one day we got to know my brother (Tusshar Kapoor) wants to do it. And he’s done it! And he’s come and told us, and he’s done it. ‘I’ll be a single father’. Now both my parents are looking gob smacked.”

Ekta Kapoor welcomed her son Ravie in January 2019 and she celebrated his first birthday for which she had thrown a grand party. It is so lovely that filmy people like Ekta Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor and many others are going in for the boon of surrogacy and becoming single parents.
